February 12, 2024Balancing work and caring for children, especially during school holidays, can be challenging, in particular if you are working from home with possible distractions.
Here are some tips to help you manage this juggling act effectively without losing your sanity:
- Establish a Routine: Create a daily schedule that includes designated work hours and breaks for both you and your children. Having a routine helps set expectations and provides structure for the day.
- Communicate with Your Employer: If possible, communicate with your employer about your situation and negotiate flexible work hours or arrangements during school holidays. Communicate your needs as well as your boundaries and working hours.
- Work in Blocks: Break your work tasks into manageable block to remain focus. Stay in the “deep work” mode during these blocks. That means sustaining periods of undistracted focus and concentration, during which valuable work is produced.
Plan regular breaks when you can take few deep breaths or perhaps spend these breaks with your family. - Set Clear Boundaries: Set boundaries with your family regarding your work time. Let them know when you need to focus on work and when you’ll be available to spend time with them. Encourage independence during your work hours by providing activities for them to do on their own.
- Seek help and support: Whether you have a partner, parents, friends, neighbours or school parents, reach out and ask for help, tips, resources and childcare when needed. Asking for help is one thing, but accepting it is another!
- Create a Designated Workspace: Set up a dedicated workspace where you can work without distractions. This could be a separate room or a quiet corner of your home where you can focus and be productive. Reduce digital use to stay focused, undistracted and in the deep work state to complete tasks on time.
- Plan Activities in Advance: Plan engaging activities and outings for your children during breaks in your work schedule. This could include arts and crafts, outdoor play, baking, or going for a nature walk. Having a plan in place can help minimize boredom and keep them entertained.
- Delegate and Prioritize Tasks: Prioritize your tasks based on urgency and importance to maximize productivity. Delegate tasks when necessary to reduce the mental load. Perhaps delegate household chores and responsibilities to your children based on their age and abilities. Encourage them to help with simple tasks like setting the table, tidying up their toys, or watering plants.
- Carve Time for Self-Care: Make self-care a priority by setting aside time for yourself each day. Whether it’s taking a short walk, practicing mindfulness, waking up early for a long shower or enjoying a nice cup of tea in peace and quiet, find moments to recharge and reconnect with yourself.
Fill your own cup first, because you cannot pour from an empty cup! - Stay Flexible and Adapt: Understand that not every day will go according to plan, and that’s okay. Stay flexible and be willing to adapt as needed. Give yourself grace and remember that you’re doing the best you can in challenging circumstances.
Remember, that you are doing an amazing job as a mum. It’s important to find a balance that works for you and your family. Be patient with yourself and your children and celebrate the small wins along the way.
