I hear you! Sometimes we want to be everywhere, do everything, know everything and not miss out.
In today’s fast paced world, FOMO has become prevalent. It leads us to neglect our own needs and well-being, in the fear of missing out on experiences and external validations.
FOMO can significantly affect life balance in many ways.
OVERCOMMITMENT! FOMO may lead us to overcommit ourselves with extra activities, events and engagement in order not to feel left out. This leaves us tired, exhausted or even burned out at times. It also robs quality time to rest and meaningful connections.
STRESS AND ANXIETY! The constant feeling of the need or the urge to keep up with what others are doing can lead to mental overload.
DISTRACTIONS! One can feel not present in the moment in the fear of missing out on what else is happening, other events taking place.
NEGLECT OWN NEEDS! One might end up neglecting one’s priorities, needs and well-being in order not to miss out. This might not only impact one’s physical health but also leads to a sense of emptiness.
LACK OF FULFILLMENT AND SATISFACTION! Despite the constant engagement in various activities, one can still feel unfulfilled! This is because one believes that happiness lies in external validations and experiences. Nevertheless, FOMO could lead to feelings of inadequacy and comparison with others.
In order to address the effects of FOMO on one’s life balance, the first step is self-awareness and recognising the FOMO in you.
With identifying one’s values, practicing mindfulness, gratitude, self-compassion, setting boundaries and being present in the moment, one can tackle FOMO and cultivate a much more balanced life with valuable connections.
